Alveopora Coral Care Guide

Alveopora is a close relative of Goniopora, with the same flowing, flower-like polyps in a more compact form. Its colorful polyps and constant movement make it a favorite for reefers who want the Goniopora look with slightly shorter polyps.

Alveopora vs. Goniopora

The easiest way to tell them apart is to count the tentacles. Alveopora polyps have 12 tentacles, while Goniopora polyps have 24. Alveopora polyps are also usually shorter and more compact. Their care needs are similar, and both do best in a stable, established tank.

Quick care summary

Care need Alveopora
Care level Moderate
Lighting Moderate, about 100 to 200 PAR
Flow Moderate, random
Placement Lower to middle rockwork
Feeding Fine particulate foods
Aggression Low

Lighting

Moderate light, roughly 100 to 200 PAR, suits most Alveopora. Too much light can make the polyps stay short or pale. Acclimate slowly, starting lower and moving up over 1 to 2 weeks if the polyps look healthy and extended.

Water flow

Moderate, random flow keeps the polyps swaying and prevents detritus from settling on the colony. Avoid strong, direct flow that pins the polyps down.

Placement

Lower to middle rockwork works well. Alveopora is less aggressive than many LPS, but give it a few inches of space so its polyps don't touch neighboring corals.

Feeding

Like Goniopora, Alveopora takes fine foods best. Powdered coral foods or phytoplankton once or twice a week can support growth and fuller polyps. Shop our fish and coral food.

Water parameters

Keep alkalinity steady between 7 and 11 dKH, calcium at 400 to 450 ppm, and magnesium at 1,250 to 1,400 ppm. Detectable nitrate and phosphate help keep polyps full. See our reef tank water parameters guide.

Warning signs

  • Polyps not extending: check light, flow and recent parameter changes.
  • Tissue receding: often linked to instability or stinging from nearby corals.
  • Fading color: usually too much or too little light.
