Porifera — the true sponges — are among the oldest animals on Earth and some of the hardest-working organisms you can add to a reef. Every hour, a healthy sponge filters many times its body volume in water, stripping out bacteria, dissolved organics, and fine particulates while adding organic texture and color to shaded aquascape zones. They need no special lighting; shaded, flow-rich placements suit them best.
Important: Sponges must never touch air — always acclimate and transfer them fully submerged, as trapped air can be fatal to their filter channels.
